Kilcoe to Skibbereen Linear Walk

This linear walk of 12 km completes the walk from the Mizen to Skibbereen. It begins at the Kilcoe Trail Head and follows rural back-roads, passing by two large Standing Stones or Galaun and key landmarks like the Great Famine Plot in the Abbey Cemetery, eventually reaching the Trail Head at the Skibbereen Heritage Centre carpark. There is also an option of an extra 4 km loop walk know as the ‘Cnap’ Loop.

Walking Guide
Leave the Kilcoe Trail Head (1) and cross the N71 road heading north following the red arrows through the townland of Prohoness. Walk for 2.5 km and turn right at the junction (2). Go east, for 3km through Foherlagh townland, which is overshadowed by the two large Standing Stones or Galaun (3), to Rahine. At (4) there is a junction where you may turn left and follow the green arrows to complete the ‘Cnap’ Loop. To continue towards Skibbereen follow the red arrows and shortly after junction (4) turn right to Reenmurragha. Continue for 1 km and at the T junction (5) turn left. (There is an option here to turn right, follow the purple arrows and walk to the Lisheen Trail Head.) Walk from 2.5 km through the townlands of Gurteenroe and Rossnagoose. At the Old Abbey School (6) turn right at the four cross roads. Walk for about 1 km and turn right at the Junction (7). After a short distance turn left at the T Junction (8), note the Great Famine Burial Plot in the Abbey Cemetery. Take care crossing the N71 and then cross the Ilen river over the Five Arch Bridge (9). Follow the road to the left, after 1 km the Skibbereen Trail Head (10) is located in the Heritage Centre carpark.
