Danno O’Mahony
World professional champion (1935), Danno O’Mahony, made an emotional return from the United States in 1936, arriving in Cobh, Co. Cork. He arrived triumphantly into his native Ballydehob on Sunday evening, 26th July 1936.
There, thousands greeted their idol with flags and bunting draped across Main Street. A stage was set up in the field across the road from St Brigid’s N.S. where the public greeted Danno. Later that night, he was honoured at a civic reception in O’Brien’s Hall, on Staball Hill.
